What Are LEAPS?

This is the best combination of options and investing available — and Hans's favourite strategy. The best features of options, with less of the negatives, combined with the benefits of long-term investing.

Long-term options. Long-term thinking.

LEAPS are options contracts with an expiration date greater than one year — typically up to three years. They give you the leverage and flexibility of options while giving you the one thing short-term options traders rarely have: patience built in.

Just like short-term options, LEAPS offer tremendous leverage over stocks. But unlike short-term options, capital gains on LEAPS are taxed at a lower rate. Giving ourselves the gift of time allows us to zoom out, see the bigger picture, and let our thesis play out.

The Income Compass
